Location: Echo Bay, Ontario
It happened, we finally bought property and with a lot of cusing, bruised limbs, dirt under the nails, many beverages and laughter to come, we knew we had a lot of work ahead of us.
The Iron River is a small river that runs right through the property, it feeds into the Echo River, which feeds off of the Echo Lake. We can't quite swim in our section of the river, but it's still a beautiful place to cool off, collect clay and filter water. It's a serene river, that we are very happy to have but still have to figure out how to get across. That will be one of many tasks for this summer.
The property is at the end of a dead end road and has about 10% of the land one one side of the river and the remaining 90% on the other side. There is a steep cliff that overlooks the valley, probably about 40 feet and is topped with White Pines, Oaks, Blueberry bushes and Sumacs. The cliff over looks the Echo Bay Valley and Lake George: such a beautiful view. We dream of having a cabin up here, with a giant deck where yoga and coffee drinking happens on a daily basis... one day.
The young stand of Popular and Alders, leads us to believe that the property was once logged. Although this area isn't a pristine pasture for the Alpacas, it's still a good place for them, overtime they will take down the trees and be able to forage more on grasses. In the future, we hope to have a few laying hens running around and maybe a Donkey to protect the Alpacas.
With a long list of to do's we will certainly be busy over the next few months. We're very fortunate to have many friends who enjoy helping and are happy to be paid in beer, wine and food.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.
